Commitment to education and social justice 2022
The social year 2022 was dominated by the Russian-Ukrainian war, which escalated following a military attack by Russia in February 2022 and continues to this day. The Messer workforce also shares in the suffering of people affected by war and flight around the world. Therefore, Messer has set up the international internal aid fund "MesserAid" for private donations from employees, management and the Supervisory Board as well as people associated with Messer. The company matched the amount of private donations received. The money donated from the aid fund will benefit our employees in Ukraine and their families, as well as other people affected. Part of the donation will be used to help our workforce rebuild and resume their lives in the country after the war hopefully ends soon.
MesserAid is intended to have three benefits. Firstly, it helps the men, women and children affected. But the fund also encourages people to help themselves. Getting personally involved in helping others is a good way to combat the helplessness of just having to watch others suffer. Many colleagues at Messer have direct contact with refugees who are now living in their country. They help with the basic needs of these people, provide comfort, organize everyday life or actions that make children happy. To help here, support from MesserAid can be applied for. A committee examines the applications and releases the corresponding amounts. The individual initiatives are described under a specially created stream in Messer's internal communication app. In this way, all the people at Messer who have paid money into the aid fund are actively helping to alleviate need. And this is the third benefit of MesserAid: creating a sense of "we" through solidarity and deriving something positive from it yourself.
Messer deliberately refrains from communicating this commitment in social media and the local press and from making individual actions public. We are proud of the international Messer team, its willingness to help, social commitment and prudence.
A total of 193 Messer 2022 locations worldwide got involved in the form of cash and in-kind donations, social events or for social institutes. Our teams supported a total of 298 actions for social causes.

Spain: Projects awarded the Messer Prize
Messer Ibérica awarded the tenth Messer Prize to students on the Chemical Engineering course and the third Messer Prize to students on the same course in Food Bioprocess Engineering at URV, the Higher Technical School of Chemical Engineering (ETSEQ) of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. The first had to compare the sustainability of the production of aromatic compounds in a refinery and a biorefinery. They proposed a study on the production of synthesis gas from biomass as a substitute for natural gas, focusing on greater sustainability of production and energy and economic independence. This work earned them an invitation to the Messer Group's technology center in Krefeld, Germany. The same trip was made by the winning team from the URV Food Bioprocess Engineering course, who designed a plant for the production of tempeh. The jury, made up of university professors and Messer employees, took into account the overall assessment of the projects, their presentation and the knowledge demonstrated by the members of each group. They also placed particular emphasis on the use of industrial gases in the processes designed in the projects.
Spain: Award for master's student
As part of its cooperation with the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Messer in Spain presented the "Work Experience" prize to Eduard Estopañán, a master's student in chemical engineering. The award winner will complete an internship at our company and write his master's thesis on the application of green hydrogen for heat generation. The tuition fees for his master’s degree will be covered by Messer. One aim of this initiative is to discover talent that will enrich our workforce. During the collaboration, the practical benefits then come to the fore: some projects by previously awarded students have already been put into practice at Messer in Spain. This applies, for example, to the pH value control of the cooling water circuit using CO2 or to a manual addressing the efficiency and design of air evaporators.
Spain: "Green Chemistry" at the University of Tarragona
In February 2022, we took part in a conference on "Green Chemistry" organized by the Faculty of Chemistry at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona. The Head of Application Technology at Messer in Spain presented our company and our sustainability goals in his talk. He also showed how we are helping to make our clientele's processes more sustainable through the use of gases. An overview of the current situation of green hydrogen and Messer's experience in the green hydrogen value chain were further topics of his speech. In this context he also addressed the path marked out by the Spanish government for the transition to renewable energies by 2030 and referred to the potential of the Catalan Hydrogen Valley. Complementing the presentations the conference offered various activities. These included workshops and film screenings, as well as a photo competition themed "Green Hydrogen - Where Are We?".
Switzerland: Parents help children choose a career
The "Career Presentation" project aims to awaken an interest in the diversity of professions for schoolchildren: in this way, parents can also present their profession and the company in which they are employed to schoolchildren. The Head of Application Technology at Messer in Switzerland gave a short talk about Messer, his job as an engineer in the industrial gases sector and his duties as a project manager. Practical demonstrations allowed the children to see how liquid nitrogen is used.
Germany: Lecture at physicists' conference
At the 25th German Conference of Women Physicists, Messer was invited to shed light on the working life of the female workforce at Messer in particular. We presented the diverse fields of application of both gases and our team. It is important for Messer to get women from the natural sciences excited about Messer. The annual conference, at which female physicists from various disciplines and career levels network, has been supported by Messer for several years.

Spain: Donation for the new social facility in Rambla Vella in Tarragona
Messer Ibérica once again supported the social activities developed by the Xarxa de Santa Tecla with a donation of 4,400 euros for the purchase of various materials and furniture for a new home. Messer's contribution is a response to the chemical company's long-term commitment to the Xarxa Santa Tecla. Carmen Juárez from the social sector of Xarxa Santa Tecla expressed her personal thanks for Messer Ibérica's contribution, which supports social projects run by the health and social network of Santa Tecla for the benefit of socially vulnerable groups. With a budget of 2.4 million euros, the new residence of the Estela Foundation will provide a total of 24 public places for people over 18 years of age with functional diversity in a facility located in the center of the city of Tarragona.
The project consists of the refurbishment of two floors of a building located in the Rambla Vella of Tarragona, which will be equipped with two completely independent housing units, each with a capacity of 12 people, focusing on individual spaces, comfort and privacy of residents. In addition, each housing unit has its own kitchen, bathroom and toilet. The location of the new dormitory, built according to energy efficiency criteria, allows residents to have better access to the city center of Tarragona, allowing for better interaction and integration into society.
Germany: Gifts for the Kinderzukunft project
At the end of the year, the Messer team in the Corporate Office packed Christmas parcels to bring a little smile to the faces of as many disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe as possible at Christmas.
Austria: Messer Austria hands over donation for "Neighbor in Need”
The staff and management of Messer Austria have collected 10,000 euros for Nachbar in Not and transferred it to the aid organization. The money will benefit people in need in Ukraine.
North Macedonia: Messer supports inclusion event
Messer in North Macedonia supported the inclusion event organized by the Association Autism AAMK and Collective Veternica - Skopje. The "Let's play together" event took place in the Skopje City Park in a wonderful atmosphere that was enjoyed by all.
The foundations
On April 6, 1978, Dr. Hans Messer and his family established the private charitable foundation now known as the Dr. Hans Messer Foundation. The independent foundation is a shareholder of the Messer Group and promotes education, science and research throughout Germany.
In the social and health spheres Ria Messer established a second charitable foundation – today’s Ria Messer Foundation – in memory of her husband Dr. Hans Messer.
The activities of both charitable foundations are independent of those of Messer.
Foundations Examples
Dr. Hans Messer Foundation
The purpose of any foundation should be to support projects and ideas that are given no or insufficient consideration within the framework of basic state provision. The Dr. Hans Messer Foundation also pursues this idea by supporting and recognizing scientists who gain prominence through special or outstanding achievements, by awarding scholarships and prizes, and by supporting scientific and educational establishments.
The Dr. Hans Messer Foundation’s activities encompass support and funding as well as operational aspects. It operates as a charitable foundation with legal capacity established under private law, making a varied and ongoing contribution to the promotion of science and research as well as school and vocational education. This work is becoming increasingly important in this day and age as the state is often unable to provide sufficient funding. In this way, thirst for education, innovation, scientific curiosity and pioneering spirit are rewarded.
The purpose of the Dr. Hans Messer Foundation is to be a driving force for education and science. According to its charter, the Dr. Hans Messer Foundation supports science and research, public and vocational education, and the provision of help to students. In all, more than 20 million euros have been spent for foundation purposes to date.
The Board of the Dr. Hans Messer Foundation determines the focus of the foundation’s work with the aim of defining a specific direction. The focal areas can change, however, or apply for only a certain period of time. The foundation currently focuses on science and research grants primarily in STEM fields, i.e., science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The field of medicine also receives regular funding. The Dr. Hans Messer Foundation awards a number of different scholarships to students, undergraduates, doctoral candidates and professionals. In addition, special scholarship programs are also set up.
Ria Messer Foundation
The aim of the Ria Messer Foundation is to support the most vulnerable members of our society. In accordance with the charter, the foundation supports charitable projects and public welfare projects.
Even today there are many people who are more vulnerable than others. People who are sick or need care, people who do not receive enough support in our society, but desperately need help. This is precisely where the Ria Messer Foundation seeks to provide assistance. In keeping with the times, it fulfils the binding social contract implicit in the will of the founder: helping other people.
The Ria Messer Foundation treats all people with respect and tolerance. Its activities encompass support and funding as well as operational aspects. It has been a charitable dependent foundation established under private law since it was founded. It is held in trust by the Dr. Hans Messer Foundation.
The purpose of the foundation is to provide support to specific individuals within the meaning of § 53 AO (German tax code) and to promote social welfare. This purpose shall be achieved by helping individuals who are dependent on the help of others as a result of their physical, mental or psychological condition (§ 53 No. 1 AO of the German tax code), who find themselves in need through no fault of their own, for example as a result of natural disasters, who are in need according to § 53 No. 2 Clause 3 AO of the German tax code, by providing one-off or ongoing financial support in order to remedy their need in the long term or by financially aiding the work of the leading independent welfare organizations or other tax-privileged bodies operating in the charitable sector or other tax-privileged organizations providing care and treatment to individuals suffering from serious illnesses through no fault of their own.
